Having done some studio work in the past, there's nothing worse than saying "it's good enough", and then listening to the finished product, and hearing a sour note. When I mentioned above that it took me 102 takes to get a solo, I did not say I got it right. There is definitely a bum note, I heard it upon playback, but when you're in 3-digit territory and it's a home recording no one is ever going to hear, you accept it and move on with life....

It's important to remember that Joe is voicing his views/opinions as a pro, he hears things in his performance that a fan wouldn't necessarily key in on. I do think that once Joe went to the Alembic and later on Music Man basses the precision of his playing increased greatly, I noticed this on the Cultosaurus tour. IMHO that tour was the zenith of Joe and Albert's synthesis as a BOC rhythm section which hasn't been equaled since, hearing that Alembic cut through the mix every time is a revelation.

The rhythm section on Cultosaurus is indeed tight as hell and it’s their proggiest album by far. I’ll bet seeing them on that tour was an unbeatable experience.

I remember an interview where Joe said that that he got along fine with Tom Werman as he was the first producer that allowed him to overdub bass parts after the basic tracks have been cut.
