This interview was published March 24, 2024, so recent. I'm not sure the exact date of the interview itself.
I'm not even going to try to explain this one. The lead paragraph is: "Blue Öyster Cult bassist Joe Bouchard revealed the one thing he doesn’t like about ‘Don’t Fear The Reaper’ — it’s ‘sloppy"
DISCLAIMER: There's a section with Buck's take, but I'm not sure his comments specifically addressed Joe B.'s comments, of if it's even recent material.
There's also a long (1 hr 8 min) video interview in there titled "Blue Oyster Cult: Exclusive Interview with Joe Bouchard". I did not have time to listen to it.
Flaming BBQ Pit Joe's opinion is that DFTR is PERFECT the way it is. IF something buried in there was "sloppy" my ears could care less.

He also said they did 57 takes of Godzilla, using take 56, as REAPER was done 7 times and used Number 6. I'm seeing some numerology there.... |

Yeah Joe is clearly a perfectionist & talking about his bass playing. From the perspective of being both a fan & a bass player I can't hear anything wrong with the bass on DFTR.

I don't remember 57 takes of Godzilla. It wasn't that hard to play.
As for the "Reaper" take, it was a long song, and the take we went with had the magic. In the tape days, we would have likely erased Joe's original bass if he tried to redo it. We weren't gonna risk it.

Yeah Joe is clearly a perfectionist & talking about his bass playing. From the perspective of being both a fan & a bass player I can't hear anything wrong with the bass on DFTR. I can see his point of view. If one is a perfectionist and listening to a recording of his own playing, ESPECIALLY in a studio setting, one could easily think "I could have done that better". Of course better is subjective and what is "better" for the sound of the overall song, not focusing in on just one specific instrument, could be different.
They say sometimes a person is his own worst critic.

It is interesting to me how folks remember different settings(especially in the music biz). Not gonna say anything is wrong about his recollection,but also can't believe Godzilla took that many takes.

I wonder if the, played 57 times and used the 56th, was said in jest! Buck said he doesn’t remember it, and he seems to be a patient kinda guy, but 57 times seems over the top. I have zero musical skills, other than high school band; which I only joined so I could be a majorette, and I could probably come up with something bearable in 57 times, lol. I can’t imagine BÖC struggling through, especially since Buck said it was a relatively easy song to do.

I can’t imagine BÖC struggling through, especially since Buck said it was a relatively easy song to do. Years ago I wrote and recorded a song. Did the rhythm break first then wrote the solo over it. Mind you, I'm not a lead guitar player but I can write simple leads. This one has a few hammer-ons/pull-offs and a string bend (ooooh, a string bend!), and it's at a moderate pace. 102 takes. After awhile, I swore that Cakewalk (my recording program) was mocking me. But I got it done. Haven't played it since (which was 2002 or 3). I actually would like to hear it by someone who could do it in considerably less than 102 takes. The rhythm I still play and can nail every time. So, yeah, no way BOC took 57 takes for Godzilla. That would mean I was off on my take-age by a factor of 10 and as bad as I am, no way it would take me 1,000. I'll just leave it at this: From BOC through FOUO there is only 1 thing in 1 song I would slightly change and it's solely a personal preference and it DOES NOT involve a solo. (Ok, I'd find something to replace Debbie Denise....) |

A purely hypothetical example:
I've done some design things (not music) that I did over and over and over. After 56 iterations I'd be pretty sick and tired of working on it, but did #57 anyway and it sucked. Man, that #56 ruled and is looking better and better! #56 it is! |

Joe, I hear ya! I’ve definitely had to do and redo many things during my lifetime, so I see where you are coming from for sure! It was hard enough doing and redoing on my own, can you imagine a group of people having the tenacity to redo something 57 times? Whether it was 15, 57, or 157, I think we can all agree that it was worth it!!!!!

Having done some studio work in the past, there's nothing worse than saying "it's good enough", and then listening to the finished product, and hearing a sour note.
