To me, it depends on why they applied for the patent. They may have done it to protect that capability and prevent someone else from developing and marketing a device that could block video recording. Now that Apple has the patent, anyone else trying to market a product using similar technology could potentially be sued by Apple for patent infringement. And this extends beyond the realm of concert recording. What if criminals had the technology and could block people from recording their criminal activity? I'm assuming that Apple is looking at the bigger picture here (no pun intended). I can't see them being too concerned about people recording and posting shaky concert videos on YouTube. I'll wait and see what if anything Apple does with the patent before I form an opinion.

...So my ability to record would be completely blocked via infrared signal, right? Hmmmmm.....
I've attended many a live performance where cameras/recording devices are simply not allowed. Peter Wolf does this at his shows -- the deal is NO photos. NO recording. End of discussion.
Is recording at concerts really this big a deal that it becomes a joint venture between the venue and the manufacturer of my phone? Really?? I'm not trying to make any enemies here, but does it occur to anyone that this restriction might extend to other "live" events like mass-shootings and marathon bombings?
Maybe I'm on glue. I will politely sign off now, and take the attack offline -- I'll imagine you calling me everything but a white Christian. You can envision me wearing my aluminum hat (we haven't used tinfoil in decades), whilst listening to last night's Caravan To Midnight. But seriously... one of the upper-story tenants of a building overlooking the Boston event took HUNDREDS of photos -- essentially documenting the movements of each of the victims, and everyone else in the crowd. Do you think it can't be true because you haven't seen it on CNN? As a BOC fan, do you buy into the idea that our government is hiding our interaction with UFOs? Is it so far-fetched, then, to (at least) consider that they might create false-flag events to snatch our liberties? ...On one hand, keeping us hypnotized with electronics makes for a very submissive citizenry. But if it means we blow their cover with photographic proof, not so good.

My apologies, Emily! I did not intend to single you out with my comment! So sorry! I probably DO sound bitter, but I find it troubling that people don't think more deeply -- and again, that's directed at the audience, in general. I find it frustrating that we are so trusting. We the sheeple tend to swallow everything we're told. Where's our healthy skepticism? And then we end up in an actual debate over whether we agree that recording AT A CONCERT should be restricted. Well, I'm willing to have that debate, except ...wait a minute... does it seem weird to anyone that this would be controlled by the phone manufacturer? If it's an issue, how come the venue and the artist aren't restricting it directly? I'm as guilty as anyone in being swayed sometimes. On the other hand, I'm usually the one to call "BS" and that's when I get attacked. When I referenced my tinfoil hat and being called a white Christian, these are REAL things I've been told. HA HA! -- Again, I'm so sorry because I meant this in jest. I find these things quite funny, if not completely ridiculous. No one ever keeps it as nice as "I think you're crazy" or "aren't you too cynical?" anymore. It gets very personal. I think your topic is a good one. I'm just hoping there are more people out there that question WHY. Hugs, Emily!

I ain't buyin' it.
I just attended 2 Peter Wolf shows & I did not SEE a phone during the entire performance.
I'll refrain from extrapolating (therefore getting political) in this forum, but it kinda reminds me of the way people don't think about the digital profile they regularly update while using Facebook.
Re bullying: I'm a big girl. I can take the heat. My friends tease me. We have a lot of laughs about it. I'm known to be somewhat paranoid; I'm not bothered by that. The payoff comes when they follow my lead -- when they begin to question, like I do. I would love to say more, but not gonna get political.....

Tech that could prohibit cell phones from taking pictures/videos would be deployed far and wide beyond the piddly non-importance of popular music concerts. Where is the origin of your first post info, Emily?

Ha. Commenters there are having the same thoughts we are. Seems like a dumb idea anyway. In the smart phone era, everybody has a video camera. I think it's generally to the good, if obnoxious at times.

It's worse when people take their ipads to gigs and hold those up to film...
It's a strange modern phenomenon that people can only seem to appreciate something if they view it through a screen - a guy was on TV this morning saying how he took his 11 year old to some gig like Adele or someone like that and his son constantly had his camera up in front of them, so much so that the dad watched most of the gig through his son's viewfinder... and then another guy piped up and said when he went to see a gig recently in some massive shed where the stage was like 4 miles away, he could only see what was happening down onstage by watching the massive screens at the side...
The genie's out of the bottle now - the experience isn't real if it ain't composed of pixels...

The jumbotron images can be useful for those in the nosebleed seats. I catch myself watching the screens when we play live. I never get to see it in real time!

ever notice the running back or wide receiver at a NFL game, while running down the field looking at the jumdotron watching himself run with the ball.i dont think BUCK is looking to see if eric or richie is sneaking up from behind to strip his guitar out of his hands or tackle him.i can say that BUCK looks pretty good up on the big screen from one of the shows a while back.might of been at the T-BOWL.CENTOLA might know what i am talking about.

So if Apple has a patent on the tech, what would stop other mfg's from recording? Wouldn't it be an incentive to buy something else if that is important to you as a phone owner?

I keep reflecting on this post. Realizing the risk in offending some with my "political" opinion... the FBI has a messy situation on their hands. They've had to confiscate and wipe all the cell phones of the Route 91 attendees that came forward. Is it not plainly obvious that if we didn't have all that audio and video, we'd have to go along with the story that was initially fed to us? You never know when the next show you go to might have this Apple technology in place.
