Buck - saw this gig advertised for Hawaii in March: www.seva.org/site/PageServer?pagename=mauiIt's Jackson Browne headlining, supported by Joan Baez and Krishna Das (aka Stony Brook student Jeff Kagel)... That was obviously always going to be of interest to me because of the SWU connections, as I'm currently researching that particular timeframe for a section on the Hot Rails site... Now, I realise the planned gig of SWU supporting JB didn't happen in the end, but I was just interested in your take on the whole Jackson Browne affair... Why didn't the gig take place? And what do you recall of his stay in the band house? Was it ever a serious proposition that SWU and JB would join forces for more than just the one gig? Or was it always just going to be a one-off support slot, like you did with Steve Noonan and Chuck Berry...?

Or was it always just going to be a one-off support slot, like you did with Steve Noonan and Chuck Berry...? Ralph, I wasn't involved in the planning of the Jackson/SWU opportunity. Jackson was a friend of John Weisenthal's, and the planned music together was likely a wish of John's and Sandy Pearlman's, perhaps a synergy that might work out. It was fun jamming with him and making music in that short interlude. Jackson had not yet broken out as an artist, but he was already on his way. He'd done a publisher's demo LP (publishers would make private LP records in those days to promote their songs. I can't remember which publisher Jackson was with, but it might have had something to do with Elektra Records.) Listening to that LP, it was obvious that young Jackson was a writer to be reckoned with, and likely an artist too. Jackson didn't need us, the Underbelly and subsequent BOC identity was unnecessary and too strong for Jackson's benefit. The band Jackson eventually constructed was great and dedicated to Jackson's objectives. The situation with Steve Noonan was similar, it was tied into a gig Steve had at Stonybrook, and the connection to us was either Weisenthal's or Pearlman's through his NY record company connections. SWU backing Chuck Berry was gig specific. Chuck always required the promoter to hire a backing band, and SWU were the designated drivers for that gig, and we got an opening slot in the bargain, for the BB King headliner at the club Generation on 8th st in NYC, in the space which later became Electric Lady recording studios. While Jackson is playing with (and honoring) Krishna Das on March 4 in Maui, I doubt if Jackson had any consciousness (krishna or otherwise) of Jeff Kagel at Stonybrook at that time. Six degrees.
