Buck, Rewatched your appearance on 'That Metal Show' recently. On that show you said the song you wished you had written was 'Boys of Summer'. Heard the song on the radio and kept imagining it as a version you sing and play. Would love to hear you do a version for real!

Yeah, but I'd be hard pressed to come up with something that would improve on the original. The guitar and vocal are already hard to top or compare to.

I dunno, it's always sounded VERY 80s to me... might be interesting to try and renovate it and give it a fresh coat of paint... to be honest, and maybe I'm on my own with this one, but whenever I hear that song, I don't accord it the respect it might be due because it sounds like a bunch of other songs juxtaposed that it reminds me of - but when I try to pinpoint which songs exactly, the answer is always just out reach- like when you wake up and try to recall exactly what you were just dreaming of but it always just eludes you... though you KNOW Taylor Swift and a jar of peanut butter was probably involved somewhere in there - oh, no wait - maybe that's just me...

Just for you Ralph; reminds me of the CotHM track, I Just Like to be Batter.

Food for thought. That intro is pretty good tho. Maybe I'll mess with it a bit.

I like the sound of that. For me - that's what would give it validity - "messing" definitely would be the way to go... like they say on "X Factor": "make it your own"!!
Whenever I hear a cover, that's always my first thought: am I hearing "recreation" or "inspiration"... for example, I always enjoy Richie's "Bandgeek" podcasts, but my main problem with them is that they usually take great pains to recreate - objectively - an accurate rendition of whatever song they're featuring in that edition... Richie's an amazing and talented multi-instrumentalist... I just wish he'd "mess with" things a little more... otherwise, my next question would always be: why?

Just for you Ralph; reminds me of the CotHM track, I Just Like to be Batter. As David Bowie once said: "The batter comes out bitter on a stolen guitar" - or words to that effect.. his thoughts on peanut butter, however, have never been accurately recorded... :-)

Police say "No motive for for bad lyrics on subway." Paper mister?
Nobody on the road, Nobody in a hiding place I feel it in the air, The summer tends to fly away Empty lake, empty streets, The sun scrapes the sky in May. I'm driving by your house And most of you have gone away
But I can see you, Reason tends to fly away You got your hair combed back Like silver scrapes in May, baby. I can tell you the sand becomes a grizzly crust After most of you have gone away.
I never will forget those nights. Out there upon the beach Remember how you made me crazy, Remember where the winds come from I don't understand what happened to our love. But, baby, It's never said at all I'm gonna show you what I'm made of.
I can see you, Reason tends to fly away I see you walking real slow And you're smiling at everyone. And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of astronomy have gone.
Out on the road today at the Four Winds Bar you know A little voice inside my head said: “Desdinova”, “Eternal Light” I thought I knew what love was The origin of storms Those days are gone forever Just one door let to take you in, but
I can see you, Four winds at the four winds bar Behind the clock back there Radios appear, baby. And I can tell you, In hellish glare and inference After you're married, it's never said at all, baby
I can see you, The queenly flux, eternal light You got that hair slicked back, And those Suzy dear eyes, baby I can tell you my love for you will prove a sight After the the boys of astronomy have gone

The Ataris did a good commercial punk version of it too.

I don't know the music term but I always thought Buck and Henley had a similar 'timber' to their singing voices.

Great thread! We used to cover Boys Of Summer in my band. I remember hitting a lot of resistance with other band members when I suggested adding it to our playlist. We had to move it to C# Minor, which is the key Henley has sang it for the last couple of decades. I loved playing it on guitar, the guitar fills and the last solo are super fun to play. Boys Of Summer always kind of reminds me of Shooting Shark for some reason, kind of the same vibe, Henley and Buck have similar vocal styles, both beautiful songs. The First time we played Boys Of Summer I was able to look at my band mates and say "See, I told you people would like it" It was always one of our best tunes, it would fill the dance floor, and the musicians who just sat and watched liked it too because it isn't easy to pull off, and no cover bands in my area ever attempted it.
