A great and unique voice when music allowed unique voices. I related this story on FB:"Did you know they tried out for Lieber and Stoller around I think the mid- to late 60's and they turned them down. One of the Americans(of Jay and the Americans) relates how they had no money and how he put them up much to the chagrin of his wife (who he claims became his ex because of it)."
RIP Walter

My favorite 'Dan record is Royal Scam, although they're all great up to Aja. Steely Dan was the main reason I continually upgraded my playback stuff back then.
I just became aware of the Kenny Vance connection to Fagan/Becker. Another plus for Kenny. Sorry Walter was ill, apparently. There's nothing out there comparable to what they did now.

Vance and some of Americans had a group called The Rockaways while at Red Bird.Kenny I believe has beaten his cancer and I think is back performing altho I hear from performers I know that he has other issues.I saw Kenny many times got to know his back up guys one of whom was Gary Bonner from The Magicians who wrote many tunes including Happy Together. For some reason Gary liked to punch me in the shoulder as we hung out at the bar at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen.LOL Great guy he and his buddies all moved out to Calif and Kenny got different back up guys one who is a good buddy of mine who then went on to take the original Jay of Jay and the Americans Jay Traynor's place in The Tokens when Traynor passed. I don't think anything compared to SD but I felt that way about most 70's bands-they still had the 60's take on how music was supposed to sound as a reflection of who the different band members were.A bit lost today(re:why todays music sucks thread)

Royal Scam complete LIVE:
Buck, did you ever run into Larry Carlton in Ithaca? Like 2 ships passing in the night, with his work with Christopher Cross and The Dan...

Chuck, if Larry Carlton was ever in Ithaca, it was long after I got there in the '80's. He was already an A list session guy in LA by then.

Always been a huge fan of Larry's playing.....underappreciated by most...we know who he is but its surprising to me how many casual music listeners dont.
Add Mike Campbell and Robben Ford and 100 other great players to that list that should be household names.
Guitarist give our ears and soul such a gift.

Buck, does that include Aja for you, or no? If not, just curious what you might not enjoy about that album, as it's my fave one of theirs.
