It's been a while since I've visited the board here, glad to see that that there's been a good amount of activity and that Ralph's untiring quest for BOC trivia/history/pre-history remains as strong as ever; I was saddened - of course - to read of BD's Father's passing, my belated condolences to all family members and friends.
My absence was due to a phone call I received last year from my ENT, 'Son, you've been stung by the big 'C'. Yes indeed, cancer made a rather unexpected appearance in my life, despite having a rather unspectacular lifestyle devoid of smoking, narcotics, and alcohol for a solid 35+ years...you just never know what Providence has in store for you. Anyway, the good news is that my blitzkrieg treatment of radiation and chemo ('...you're in good shape for your age, so you're getting the Tokyo Fire Bomb Treatment...') appears to be successful as a recent scan shows the tumor to have been vanquished.
Some words of wisdom to other middle-agers (especially men, who are notorious for avoiding the Dr) - get your annual check-ups, if something doesn't feel right get it checked, make sure you have your financial house in order (don't skimp on health insurance, a bad time to go shopping for life insurance is after you've been diagnosed with an illness, protect your family's assets/financial legacy by consulting a professional, i.e. getting a trust which is very effective and cost-effective), and make sure the relationships with your friends and family remain strong and are not compromised by pettiness or unnecessary drama.
I consider myself very fortunate/blessed despite what I went through, I wouldn't wish the side effects of chemo/radiation on my worst enemy; please take care of yourselves.
