Buck - I was interested to hear you confirm that - prior to the first Columbia demo with David Rubinson - you did a Mercury demo - the only indication I've ever seen previously about an initial Mercury demo session was in a 1973 article by Meltzer in which he mentioned "Mercury had turned 'em down already"...
You once said the "Columbia demo exists as reel to reel tape somewhere" - presumably the same can be said for the Mercury one also... these would be fascinating to hear - everyone's loving the band-recorded demo of "Rain's Fallin" that went up on youtube a couple of days ago, and that was just a do-it-yourself reel-to-reel recording... imagine how great it would be if these early studio demos could see the light of day?
And they should... they really should...

I don't know what happened to those early reel to reel demo tapes. They did exist, but I don't have any of 'em.

I had an acetate of "Rational Passional" from the Elektra days, but that was eBay'd by the estate of my Mom's deceased second husband.

Yes, I saw that in Feb 2016 - the starting bid was $999 and the "buy it Now" price was "$4,999", so, unfortunately, it was a little beyond my means, but I'd LOVE to have heard it...

Maybe nobody answered the first bid and the seller lowered the starting price ?

Well, $4999 was a tad optimistic...

That's the disk, there may have been more than one copy. Not sure if mine had "DEMO" written on it.

Not sure if mine had "DEMO" written on it. The accompanying text description said "This is a rare rough cut demo from Electra Records and was Buck Dharma's personal copy..." Both Les and Andy Winters said they didn't get copies, so they hadn't heard this... Whoever bought it - even at $200 or whatever it eventually went for - must surely be a fan, but doesn't seem to be a part of any of the usual forums, FB groups etc, otherwise they'd be asked - with extreme prejudice - to digitise a copy for everyone to hear... It's a MASSIVE disappointment that a - relatively - finished(ish) version of this exists but we can't get access to it... Andy Winters tells the story that the band once mimed to the Rational demo with some of the audience at the "Electric Circus" and nobody noticed that it wasn't live... my presumption has always been that it was to just such an acetate version... (The version on youtube isn't a straight run through - it's interrupted with chat from the booth etc, which is both interesting and a shame in equal measure...)
