Always thought this was the saddest song-I prefer The Fleetwoods version,Buck I believe was partial to the Thomas Wayne version-both great IMO.If you eliminate the teen accident songs(Last Kiss,Teen Angel,Patches,Tell Laura I Love Her) then you have these types of sad tunes-of course the 50's were all about unrequited love:

I think it's funny that Eric's vocals on Goin' Through The Motions make it a sad song, but Bonnie Tyler's cover makes it sound more... I guess defiant? Triumphant? Eric can sometimes have a very soulful and expressive voice, ESPECIALLY around the Spectres era. His voice on BOC's cover of Be My Baby is incredible. But with Goin' Through the Motions, those same words coming from another voice take the sadness out of the song entirely. I don't know if that's a good thing, because there is a kind of ambiguity in the lyrics enough that any singer can imbue the song with any emotion based on their own interpretation. I think The Revolution By Night album really showcases the gamut of what Eric can do vocally. You talk sad songs, I think Eyes On Fire is a tune most people can relate to, always being the friend but not the significant other to the one you desire. Eric shines on this track; you can really feel the emotion in his voice. Add to that the jovial pop of Let Go, then the authority of a hard rock frontman in Take Me Away, Shadow of California, and Feel the Thunder, And I believe TRBN is a prime example of what we BOC fans have long known - that EB is an extremely underrated vocalist.

Nice that you'd bring her up she started with the all-female group The Hearts who had their own hit with Lonely Nights around '56 and her big hits were all pained filled ditties like That's How Heartaches Are Made and Leave Me Alone.Met her at a Hunter College gig in the 90's sweet lady. She did a great duet with the JIve Five's Eugene Pitt that I caught live at a show back then:

"That's How Heartaches Are Made" is heart wrenching. What a vocal. Songs like that will likely never be covered by today's artists.
No one wants to sing the blues these days, I think.

They used to write songs for teenagers now it's for pre-teens I think.Heavy duty lyrics might be nowadays Somebody Stole My Give-A-Show Projector or who Smashed My Sno-Cone Machine just to use some 60's references.Ha.

The best Spectorish song Phil never did .

Well glad I managed to resurrect this thread by throwing one of mine out just for the heck of it.
It's been interesting to see the wide variety of "first choices" you all have shared based on various viewpoints on what is "sad". From boyfriend/girlfriend (or wanted to be) problems, to lost love from circumstances or tragedy, to about actual death of someone else or the actual artist.
No matter which viewpoint some of the "sad" songs were some of the most powerful, and sometimes the most popular. At least in the past.
I'm not tuned in to a lot of the newer music and I'm sure there is some good stuff out there, but some I've heard I'm just sad I even listened to it.

Todays country music saddens me-stupid lyrics and the whole sense of craft is fer-cocked.

This one is plenty sad. A rare cover improving on the original, which should be impossible because the original is Burt Bacharach who is masterful. His version is a great song, but Love made it into one of the greatest songs ever IMO

Willie Nelson's Always On My Mind is an incredibly sad song. Just about any tune that accompanies an ASPCA commercial is going to be a tear-jerker.

His version is a great song, but Love made it into one of the greatest songs ever IMO It took me about 20 years to hear the Bacharach version, which to my ear is different and inferior to Love's version. The college band that Albert Bouchard and I had, The Travesty, did a credible cover of the Love "Little Red Book" with a powerful vocal by the late Skip O'Donnell.
