This one is plenty sad. A rare cover improving on the original, which should be impossible because the original is Burt Bacharach who is masterful. His version is a great song, but Love made it into one of the greatest songs ever IMO It took me about 20 years to hear the Bacharach version, which to my ear is different and inferior to Love's version. The college band that Albert Bouchard and I had, The Travesty, did a credible cover of the Love "Little Red Book" with a powerful vocal by the late Skip O'Donnell. Did the Travesty ever try and slip any 'own compositions' into their setlists...?

Maybe you and The Band Geeks could dust that one off It’s amazing the amount of bands of so many genres who have covered that. I’ve seen covers by punk bands, thrash metal bands, etc. The Love version just WORKS so well that it can be done in so many styles.

This one is a little weird
This one’s a little more rockin’
This one is way more 80s hair sounding than I would have expected coming from The Nuge
This one isn’t exactly my favorite but I like that they have it a punk rendition
And I was so sure there was a version out there by a hair metal band but I can’t find it. Either Ratt or Dokken.

These two come to mind as being extremely sad
Joey is pretty sad too and an amazingly touching song.

<actual video above removed> "Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels)" can be considered sad - it was inspired by Croce seeing soldiers lined up to use a payphone to confirm the validity of a "Dear John" letter received from a wife or girlfriend. "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" can sound sad, however he reportedly had a fight with his wife one night, went down to the kitchen and wrote this song, and then sang it to her the next morning. The saddest thing is that he died in a plane crash at the age of 30. I loved his music and I'm sure he had a lot more in him at the time of his death.

I already had this one out on the forum at: buck-dharma-forums.freeforums.net/thread/53/listening-right?page=68"MacArthur Park", sang by Richard Harris and written by Jimmy Webb. Due to the very symbolic lyrics the song can be confusing to fully understand, but it's about the end of a love affair between Webb and a woman. Webb also wrote "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", made popular by Glen Campbell, which was inspired by the same breakup that inspired "MacArthur Park".

Hard for me to get through this song. But it is beautifully written and performed.

Don't know if it's the saddest but it is one of the most covered songs ever: Yes. Susanna Hoffs gave a heartbreaking vocal on her version of it with Matthew Sweet.

Don't know if it's the saddest but it is one of the most covered songs ever: It comes across as a sad song, but in the end, it's a love song....."And I am not alone while my love is near me I know it will be so until it's time to go". The sad part of it all.....Sandy Denny's life; gone to short with a life of addiction. I've seen Richard Thompson perform this song in concert...always brings me to tears.

Addiction did not kill Sandy. She fell down the stairs hit her head and died 5 days later of a cerebral hemorrhage. She was never a druggie she did like to drink a bit One reference does say she had an "alcohol addiction", but I found no mention of any drug addiction. There is a discussion of her death at the link below. Each reader may draw a different conclusion on the accuracy of the information and whether or not alcohol had any bearing on her fall or not. Tragic in any case - she was 31 years old. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Denny#Death
