Bob Heil - age 83 American sound and radio engineer "Robert G. Heil was an American sound and radio engineer most well known for creating the template for modern rock sound systems. He founded the company Heil Sound in 1966, which went on to create unique touring sound systems for bands such as The Grateful Dead and The Who. He invented the Heil Talk Box in 1973, which was frequently used by musicians such as Peter Frampton, Joe Walsh and Richie Sambora, and is still in use today.
Heil was an innovator in the field of amateur radio, manufacturing microphones and satellite dishes for broadcasters and live sound engineers. In the late 1980s Heil Sound became one of the first American companies to create and install home theaters, and Heil has lectured at major electronic conventions and taught classes at various institutions."
The talk box itself is an interesting creature. A number of big name artists have used one. The most common use is with guitars. They were around before Heil, but his ".. was the first that could be reliable when used on high-level rock stages." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_box
Personal note: I know some of my amateur radio friends will be sad to hear this. His microphones have generally been recognized as the gold standard for amateur radio equipment. Several of my friends have them and I hear people all over the country say they are using one or more models of his mics. A couple of my friends have had conversations with him over the radio and he was generally regarded as a really nice guy in this community. DFTR

RIP Steve Lawrence. Great crooner solo and with wife E. End of an era. Loved their renditions of Christmas songs and their hits in the 60’s. Vocals were amazing.

Eric Carmen of the Raspberries Oh man! That’s VERY, VERY sad… I got to know him a little when he still lived in Gates Mills here in Cleveland/N.E. OH. He was a long time customer of my Dads turf equipment business. The times I got to talk to him, he was always super nice. Usually had a beer or a pop ready for me when I picked up or dropped off his equipment. Ironically, that’s the same way I got to meet Micheal Stanley. Another really great and friendly dude. RIP ~ DFTR to Both.

Wasn’t familiar with his work but knew the name. Surprised I didn’t after reading his wiki. Impressive.
RIP.
