I've sensed that Will Ferrell has avoided direct contact with BOC for whatever reason. Jimmy Fallon once invited the look alikes, Will Ferrell and Chad Smith to the Tonight Show to have it out by doing a comedic drum battle. I’m imagining that before the Tonight Show appearance, both were probably being told everywhere, “Hey, do you know you look just like…..” and vice versa probably to the point of being sick of hearing it. They might have done the show to let people know, “Okay everybody, see, we’re aware we look alike so you don’t have to tell us that anymore”. There’s a video on YouTube of Chad Smith playing a gig on a small stage somewhere and someone yells out, “Will Ferrell”. He yells back, “shut up” then storms off the stage. He comes back a few minutes later and I can’t really tell if this was staged or not but he seemed genuinely pissed off but had cooled down after walking off. I think this took place after the Tonight Show appearance. Fallon is always having famous musical guests participate in comedy routines on his show, such as the said drum battle, The Who playing, Won’t Get Fooled Again on plastic kid instruments, and Fallon dressed as Neil Young singing with the real Neil Young, etc. Since Fallon and Ferrell were in the skit that started this whole cowbell business maybe he should invite BOC, Ferrell, and Christopher Walken to talk about how the cowbell has intruded into their lives. Then let BOC play a couple of their new kick ass songs to show the world that they are more than just DFTR and cowbells. Buck, do you sense that Ferrell has avoided contact with BOC because he thinks you guys are mad at him? Has BOC ever tried to reach out to him?

It was referred to as a “Drum Off”….with “official Drum Off rules “. Very funny….followed by Red Hot Chili Peppers (sloppily) playing DFTR to end the show. It is impressive how DFTR has filtered into so many places over the years. Very cool.

I saw the DRUM OFF Live and the Cowbell Skit Live (I haven't missed many Live SNLs). I personally see a difference in the Meta-Attitude of Blue Oyster Cult's perceived influence on The Consumer...Before and After The Cowbell Sketch. It didn't happen overnight, but it swung from Devil Worshipping Music at its Worst, to a much more Positive Vibe. I saw this in my own family.
Are there any good movies based on one joke?

It is impressive how DFTR has filtered into so many places over the years. Very cool. Impressive to say the least. Books, television shows, movies, high school bands, college bands, even found a symphony or two playing it. When I said school bands, not the kid's garage bands, the actual official school bands. Just look at how many are on YouTube - and that's probably just a fraction of what all schools are teaching it and playing it. Not sure why they have decided to teach DFTR, but what the heck! I'm glad it has spread as much as it has. And yes, some of the performance clips focus on the cowbell, but others are dead serious. Stumbled on a couple of ladies playing it on harps, however I didn't have time to listen. The phrase even made it into an official NASA document. There are people, however, that I've asked and they have never heard the song or know the title. Or BÖC either. I asked a few of the people at my 50th HS reunion and they didn't know what I was talking about. And then I sang, as best as I could, the beginning of it. Response was about 50% "Oh, I loved that song!" They just couldn't put the title together with the song itself. The other half just didn't listen to rock music. Reaper, as a word, has been around forever. But I've never been able to determine the origin of the phrase "Don't Fear the Reaper". All the searches I tried ended up back at - well you know where. You could probably do a PhD dissertation on all the ways, why, how and places DFTR has spread. Might be more valuable as a degree than some others being offered.

well, the first to be blamed, beside Buck of course, should be Stephen King. a LOT of people have read The Stand... and a lot of people thought that Reaper was cool in a horror context (if King used it, it is cool), then we got it in quite a few movies and TV shows, even comic books.

You have to wonder if the isn't where they got the idea to cast William Sadler (The Grim Reaper) as a rockin bass player in that Bill and Ted movie too? Maybe not but the association between "reaper" and rock n roll is definitely there. The sublime mind works in mysterious ways....so maybe?

A net positive in many ways for sure.

Had a similar thought in another thread. The SNL sketch definitely took BOC/Reaper out of the evil devil worship category.

Wikipedia's official "Don't Fear the Reaper" page contains the following:
"The song features prominent use of the cowbell percussion instrument, overdubbed on the original recording."
Prominent? Maybe my ears just have a cowbell band-reject filter. The guitars and drums are prominent, but how many people even heard the cowbell in the studio recorded version, even after listening to it a hundred times? Yes, it probably adds a little something subtle, and those kinds of things can add listening pleasure, but PROMINENT? I never even noticed it until I was told about it.
