Wikipedia's official "Don't Fear the Reaper" page contains the following: "The song features prominent use of the cowbell percussion instrument, overdubbed on the original recording." Prominent? Maybe my ears just have a cowbell band-reject filter. The guitars and drums are prominent, but how many people even heard the cowbell in the studio recorded version, even after listening to it a hundred times? Yes, it probably adds a little something subtle, and those kinds of things can add listening pleasure, but PROMINENT? I never even noticed it until I was told about it. The cowbell gained prominence in the wake of the SNL skit.

... unlike say, Mississippi Queen - and maybe it is only the count in and the ending, but that's what I'd call "prominent"... I wonder if it ever pissed Corky Laing off that it was BOC who ended up getting the "cowbell crown..."

I guess my idea of "predominant use" is a little different than Wikipedia's.
Late the other night I thought of another SNL skit that in part could be "added" to the cowbell skit. Nothing bad, but no use adding any fuel to the fire. But I didn't post it because I don't want to get kicked off this forum! :)

Everybody’s all about that cowbell but nobody talks about the guiro or the vibraslap. That song has some cool stuff going on in the layers.

This forum never ceases to amaze. I had not ever heard of those 2 instruments but have clearly heard them in all kinds of tunes... The more you know...!!

I've learned more about music, instruments, production, and all things related from this forum than I had in my whole life. Makes one appreciate all the creative ways artists use "strange instruments" to get their unique sounds.

Ha...just watched the cowbell skit again (first time in 20 years or so) and either I had forgotten or just never realized Al B was played by Jimmy Fallon. He looked like he was about to crack up with laughter the whole time. Had also forgotten they were calling the guy who looked like Buck... Eric. They definitely missed on a few important details but it was also really dang funny. No wonder it has had the "staying power" within pop culture...it's one of the best pieces of satire ever!
I'll never yell "more cowbell" at a BOC show because I never want to disrespect the boys in any way....but you can't blame anyone for laughing at that funny as hell skit!

So yesterday I had never heard of the vibroslap, and today a cool interview with Steven Tyler on Howard Stern pops up on my FB discussing the use of it on Sweet Emotion. Sometimes I'm convinced our phones track us.
