For whatever reason I missed that the Psychedelic Furs had released their first album in 30 years, and so I listened to it yesterday and it was remarkably good. Like they never stopped.
Throughout Friday and Saturday I listened to the new Dream Theater album. It is their best since Octavarium in my opinion. I've listened to it four times and I'm loving it. The Mike Mangini era continues to impress me.

I had a list of artists to listen to for the next round of Deep Tracks of the Day, and one of them was Cocteau Twins. I listened to their first three albums and I just couldn't find anything I liked. It was in the background while I was working, which is probably why I even bothered to listen to three whole albums in the first place after I didn't like anything on the first one. But I figured many artists don't start out the greatest.
But damn, I love a lot of music from ABBA to Zappa, but I couldn't find anything enjoyable in The Cocteau Twins. The nicest thing I could say is their music works in the background and is better than abject silence.

Right now I have the last two Dream Theater albums on the go. I really like the musicianship on both records but can no longer stand the relentless cheese that is James La Brie (sic!). The instrumental version of Distance Over Time (2019) is excellent. The new one, A View From The Top of the World contains some of the best Petrucci riffs since Train of Thought, only spoiled when the Cheesemaster opens his mouth.

Having just read Mick Farren's excellent memoir Give The Anarchist a Cigarette,I decided to checkout the Psychedelic Trash Rock that he was famously involved in ; The Deviants & The Pink Fairies(who included one time Motorhead guitarist Larry Wallace & Hawkwind bassist Paul Rudolf).
It's interesting stuff, The Deviants are better than I remember psychedelic proto Punk with wit & humour. The Pink Fairies can cover a spectrum from brilliant to awful on one album & occasionally on one song ! They are both hugely entertaining & The Deviants first two albums Ptoof! & Disposable & the Fairies What a Bunch of Sweeties & Never Never Land have pretty much taken up squatters rights over my CD player for the last few days. In fact listening to this stuff again I think that The Deviants & the Fairies plus their contemporaries Third World War are Punks' missing link. The USA had The Stooges & The MC5 etc as trail blazers & Britain had these guys which they don't appear to receive the credit for. Give them a listen you might be surprised.

I had never listened to Ultravox before and it's a name I've seen on some lists and whatnot, so I gave them a try, and holy shit I LOVE them now. I listened to two of their albums from start to finish and both were just incredible. More synth rock than synth pop. Love it.

After watching Alex Winter's Zappa excellent documentary this weekend I have dug out & re-listened to Apostrophe & One Size Fits All. This is astonishing stuff, fantastic playing, imaginative in a way that rock music often isn't & even now they both sound ahead of their time. Might have to give Shut Up & Play Your Guitar a listen next.

I remember I was in my mid-20s and I was over my friend Adam's apartment, and he asked some question about Frank Zappa and I didn't know the answer, and mentioned I'd never listened to him. His face dropped like a cartoon character lol and he was stunned I hadn't ever listened to Zappa, and told me in no uncertain terms that I was REQUIRED to lol. He lent me his copy of Roxy & Elsewhere and I was hooked. Now I own about 60 of his albums 😆 🤣

I know some people are put off by his sense of humour & that humour isn't PC & that's a shame because the man's music was always extraordinary. My Zappa in was in a way similar to some degree to yours, in my case sometime in 1979 a friend of mine gave me a copy of Studio Tan claiming that it was "a piece of crap" & while it's not Zappa's best I was hooked. With Studio Tan the same guy also gave me Neil Young's On the Beach & offered a similar critique of it. Clearly there is no accounting for some peoples taste or alternatively what a sucker!
