I've listened thousands of times to hundreds of versions.. But I'm still concrete in saying the oem vinyl is the best pure version. I love the flagrant Allen and Buck youtube version immensely.. the OYFOOYK too..but for formal execution the original is best. What say you?

The first version I saw live was a few months before they filmed A Long Day's Night, and I was floored because I had no idea how much it had changed from the studio version or even from OYFOOYK. I thinking that has given me a bias for that era of it, so I really love the version from ALDN. But I will say, I think Jules' drumming on all the new versions suits it better than Bobby Rondinelli's, who was GREAT, but I think Jules is the not so secret weapon of modern BOC.

For me, the original AND the OYF versions are BOTH the best, just differently... Of course, the story goes that the version that appeared on the LP was actually the original David Lucas demo version they did for Columbia because they couldn't better it (so that sounds like they must have tried, when the time came to record the album)... if that's accurate, then it was obviously helped by the fact that the whole album was being recorded in the same place on the same equipment by the same guy(s), so it would fit in seamlessly with the rest of the tracks... There's something about that initial version that stepped out of the album and stood away from the rest - maybe it was the haunting melody, the plaintive tone, the doomed music noir fatalism of the lyrical content, I can't put my finger on it... and I know they were going for the Sabbath angle at the time, and LDOM didn't fit that scenario, but I've always believed that Last Days should have been the first single, and not Cities... Also - I often see it written that LDOM was the first song Buck ever wrote, but surely Port Jefferson - a track we'll probably never ever get to hear (but then again, I thought that about Mystic Stump, Patron of the Arts etc also, so who knows?) - would have been the first (that we know about) because it was much earlier...

I still prefer the OYF version-perhaps we get that for a 50th anniv show?
My fave YT version is from UncleCaptJohn 2008 Buck and Richie are IMO perfect on it.That's the one where the guy in the audience goes "Yeah Buck take me away" and where the girl they must have been oggling "Oh wow she's leaving" LOL

" I think Jules is the not so secret weapon of modern BOC"
I'm never going to argue that statement.

OYF version for me. The ridiculous live version we've had for donkeys years now is something I can't enjoy - it removes the magic from a beautiful song (IMO)

I really like the Old Waldorf version The theater in the round St Louis version '88 is really good too plus there's a mid-90's version with a split screen during Bucks jam which is really kinda spacey. Can't recall the venue.

The original is perfect in my opinion with the OYFOOYK live version running it a close second. I love the atmosphere of the original but I am also always impressed by the guitar playing & the drama of the OYFOOYK version.
I'm afraid I'm also not a huge fan of the current live version, it's obviously still a great song & maybe I've just heard it too many times but I frequently hope that the band play something like Shooting Shark instead.

Some of my faves, (the Westport shows, St. Louis) and the video doesn’t come close to doing it justice.

Interesting you say that Martso-I thought that they captured it really well as they IMO also caught knockout versions of B.B.,Reaper and Roadhouse. And who can forget "Something big coming this way now" and the next sound is that huge stomping.....................motorcycle.Had to be one of Jon's and Ron's earliest gigs.

Do many of you think the current BOC performance jam-arama LDofM damages the song? I guess it must compared to the studio or OYF version. Who is pining for the original doom-rock version?

Sure, the video and audio were well done, I’m talking about compared to being there, which I was, every time they played Westport Playhouse. #IGuessYouJustHadToBeThere
