I saw the U.S. version of "The Killing" and liked it. I guess there is also a Danish version of the show. Will have to check-out Broadchurch. Hated the US version of the Killing and stopped watching it - watch the original if you can - you'll get used to the subtitles after a while... However, the best Nordic Noir I've ever seen was "The Bridge" - it's probably the one people enjoyed the most, in my experience... My next favourite foreign import, though, was French: Spiral (Engrenages) - anybody who enjoyed The Shield or The Wire should check out Spiral - you won't be disappointed... Broadchurch? Spiral bends it over, pulls down its trousers and inserts a large boot where the sun don't shine... to erm.. coin a phrase... Neither of us here has ever gotten used to English in subtitles only. Is "The Bridge" dubbed in English? Looks like I might be able to get it here, I can just check. Got a cold with an off-and-on fever so not thinking real fast..
Looks like there is another version of The Bridge that's between Texas and Mexico. Completely different plot but similar dual jurisdiction things (obviously NOT made recently).

That's exactly how I used to think - I normally like to do other stuff whilst watching TV, but subtitles means you've got to forget everything else and just sit there and watch or else you'll get lost, and so I was initially resistant to that as a concept... however, if I wanted to watch a series like The Killing, I'd have to learn to live with it, so I gave it a go... and after a while, it didn't seem to matter so much, and I soon learned to enjoy it on its own terms... > Is "The Bridge" dubbed in English?
Oh I hope not - I hate stuff being dubbed into English, it's often done so heavy-handedly for a start, and besides, for me, you lose a lot of what makes these shows special when you do that. I've heard of the Bridge remake, but, tbh, I have no interest in seeing it - I can't see the point. I would say, if you can - give the original Bridge a try, subtitles and all, and see how you get on... Saga, the main protagonist is unlike any other cop you'll have seen before...

The original versions of The Killing & The Bridge were fabulous, especially the Bridge. The US version of the killing is poor in comparison to the original. The UK version of the The Bridge, The Tunnel is ok as long as you haven't seen the original.
Other Nordic Noirs I would recommend checking out are; Those Who Kill, The Chestnut Man & DNA.

We've watched a number of really good shows that were from Spain and Mexico or that a good part of the show was in Spanish. Some were dubbed really poorly, some so good you'd think they were English originally. Even those were partly in Spanish. I don't speak Spanish, some words here and there, but I've heard it on a regular basis for years. So I've become familiar with the sound, pace, inflections, and overall tone. So I do well with subtitled Spanish shows. But there are some languages that I have a really hard time dealing with.

I have the original The Killing but haven't watched it yet I did like the American version I thought the cast was very good.I watched Te Bridge for two seasons and liked it.Especially season one. A lot of Liam Neesons recent action films have been mined from the foreign versions.

I don't think we've yet mentioned one of the true classics: "Dirty Harry" played by Clint Eastwood in all five films in the series. The first one was released in 1971.
These movies are not for everyone and could never be made today!
Better when he says it in the movie and in context of the situation, but one of his most popular quotes:
" I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk? "

Wife reminded me she gave me some Dirty Harry movies for Christmas a "few" years back. I totally forgot. So I managed to find my present: A single DVD case - the Dirty Harry collection. All five movies, each on a separate DVD, and in surround sound. Nice!
So last night (Saturday, our traditional movie night) we lit up the original "Dirty Harry". As good now as it was back then. Had a lot of the famous quotes in it.
I mentioned earlier that some commentator said you could never make DH today. I disagree. It was actually tamer than I remember. To re-do a little of the dialogue ("slurs") would need to be removed/modified, but the rest was tamer than a lot of the stuff made much more recently. Gore was actually minimal and language not as bad as a LOT of the junk out there now.
It was just a good, entertaining movie, and the humor was well placed and appropriate. Not the over the top CGI nonsense you see now. It was probably fairly true to life if I remember the 70's right. Inspector Harry Callaghan (Clint Eastwood) kind of set the standard back then.
Looking forward to the next chapter!
